Technology Overview

 

After years of experience, we know what makes an engine tick. With this experience and adding some ‘fuzzy logic’ algorithms we can ‘predict’ an engine’s behaviour.  And when we can’t predict it, we measure and learn it. This takes a lot of computing power, hence the use of a 16bit Digital Signal Processor (DSP). The algorithms are amazing in what they are able to achieve and they continuously improve themselves to provide performance that is continuously being enhanced and fuel consumption that best suits your engine.

 

The SMT8-EFE is not a “one map fits all” ethanol controller. It uses advanced forward prediction, dynamic ethanol calculation and the spy glass technology, which all run continuously in real time to optimise the engine’s ever changing conditions.

Simple Installation                                         

Installing the SMT8-EFE couldn’t be easier because it’s a plug and play system:

 

·         Clip out injector plugs

·         Clip in SMT8-EFE harness

·         Connect ground wires to chassis ground

·         Mount SMT8-EFE engine temp sensor to hose or engine block (supplied)

·         ‘T’ into MAP sensor wire (optional)

·         Tuck the SMT8-EFE away from the engine heat.

 

As simple as that!

 

A fresh installation should be done on pure fuel or “E0”. If this is not possible, a PC will be required to input what the tank fuel mixture is. If you don’t know the tank fuel mixture, you can enter “E40” and the SMT8-EFE will do the rest.  Once this is done, the vehicle should be driven for at least 30 minutes. After this period, any fuel mixture of ethanol can be added into the fuel tank.  The SMT8-EFE will always learn and work with whatever your tank fuel mixture is while you drive (ethanol content learning). The total installation should take about 1 to 3 hours; depending on the amount of plastic covers you have over your engine.

 

The SMT8-EFE installation can be completely reversed at any stage with no damage because it is a true plug and play system. The SMT8-EFE is very small in size, making it easy to install in those small spaces in the engine bay (just keep it away from extreme heat!).

Injection Drive

The SMT8-EFE comes in 4, 6 and 8 cylinder hardware configurations. Of course, the 8 cylinder unit will work on any cylinder engine, including a one cylinder engine.

Temperature Measuring

The SMT8-EFE unit comes with a separate temperature sensor and harness which needs to be installed.  This sensor ensures fuel efficiency. Put the sensor on a water hose or on the engine block and forget about it. The Adaptive Sensor calibration logic will take over. If it is not installed or disconnects, algorithms will step in, but fuel efficiency will decrease. Another incredible innovation by dds!

Cylinder Recognition

Depending on which SMT8-EFE model you have purchased (for 4, 6 or 8 cylinder engines), you can plug the injector harnesses in any sequence and connect them to the SMT8-EFE unit.  This is one reason which makes the SMT8-EFE so quick and easy to install.

Cold Starting

We have revolutionised a “problem free” cold start!  There is no set up fuss with the SMT8-EFE. We have tested our product at -20ºC for starting and driving. The cold start logic adapts itself to your engine needs in cold weather and then ensures a successful start every time.

Many other manufacturers offer poor or no cold start characteristics. This is a very important function for an E85 controller and your engine or battery could get damaged if this does not work correctly. The SMT8-EFE is simply the best when it comes to cold starting and the best for your engine.

Ethanol Content Learning (ECL)

While you drive your car the SMT8-EFE monitors the engine and adjusts the principal fuel addition every ten seconds. As the new fuel mixture penetrates the fuel systems (pumps and pipes) the new mixture is computed and applied, thus giving you a “smooth” transient to a new fuel mixture. Unlike other manufacturers, the SMT8-EFE does not use any switches or dials to manually adjust the ethanol content mixture.

 

Safety Testing and Approval

Our previous ethanol conversion kit was the first to gain ABE approval in Europe in August 2009.  Ethanol and ethanol blends require special fire fighting procedures because of its properties and therefore our product’s installation does not touch any fuel hose or connections - one of the ABE requirements.

 

The following are the ABE requirements for any ethanol conversion unit:

·         There should be NO switch that changes the ethanol blend, either on the dash board or on the unit

·         There can be no tampering with the fuel supply to and from the engine in any way.

·         The unit must recognize the mixture automatically and do the same adjustments every time

·         The unit must pass the emission test during starting and driving

·         It must start and pass the emission test during the cold (-10 DegC) cycle

·         The unit must produce the same engine power with E85 and E0

SMT8-EFE COMPLIES WITH ALL OF THE ABOVE REQUIREMENTS

First time Ethanol conversion

Ethanol is a cleaning agent. It will clean your combustion chamber, fuel tank and fuel pipes. The resulting dirt will be trapped in your oil filter and your fuel filter. It is advisable that you drive approximately one tank full of E85 and then replace your filters. If the car has more than 60 000Km on the clock, then it might be advisable to also get an oil change done. Running your engine on an E85 blend of fuel will give prolonged life to your engine, provided you replace the filters after the first full tank.

 

Does the SMT8-EFE damage my engine?

No, your engine will run better with both E85 and especially the most advanced digital SMT8-EFE ethanol controller.

 

Ethanol in my tank for a long period

If the car is used regularly, there should be no problems. However, should the car stand for long periods, we suggest that you drain out the ethanol mixture from the fuel tank and replace it with normal fuel. Ethanol is hygroscopic (attracts water) and this could cause some damage in older cars’ fuel tanks.

 

Is Ethanol better for the Environment?

Yes, there is no doubt that ethanol fuel is better for the environment than fossil fuel. E85 only has 15% of fossil fuel present, so it is 85% better for the environment than fossil fuel. Ethanol burns clean with almost no carbon emissions. Your fuel consumption will be reduced by approximately 25%, but that still makes E85 greener and kinder to the environment.

 

When do I get my money back?

This will depend on the price of normal fuel verses the price of E85 and the mileage you drive per month. On average, you could get your money back between 6 to 18 months, depending on where you are stay and how far you drive. We have kept the price down of our SMT8-EFE to the absolute minimum so that you can get a great deal and help save our planet. You should be proud that you are making a difference for our world and going green with the SMT8-EFE FFV installation!

 

Maximum Injector Capacity?

It is possible that your injectors may be unable to accommodate the extra fuel required to operate on E85 at full throttle and high RPMs. The SMT8-EFE will detect this fatal situation and will soft cut your fuel slowly. The soft cut will make you take your foot off the accelerator and preserve your engine. This feature aids the driver to identify when the engine is at risk of being damaged.

From the Engineer…

The SMT8-EFE is an amazing ethanol control unit (ECU). It is a plug and play type controller but with so much more. When compared to our other models, it is light years ahead.

 

We have learnt from our first ECU versions a couple of years ago and have improved the physical SMT8-EFE board enabling better performance for those long journeys. The high current circuitry has been enhanced and the general current consumption of the SMT8-EFE reduced. Better current consumption of the board means less heat or losses and better overall fuel consumption.

 

The processor of the SMT8-EFE is extremely powerful. Most people in the know would say that it is not required for an ethanol unit, BUT then they don’t know what the SMT8-EFE is actually doing! (Patent pending for technology). Trust me, when I say that the amount of calculations that the DSP (Digital Signal Processor) is doing at 40 million instructions per second (40 MIPS) is about 10x more than any other ethanol controller product on the market. The advance forward prediction, dynamic ethanol calculation and the spy glass technology all run continuously in the background while the unit manages your engine’s performance. The algorithms are amazing in what they are able to achieve and they continuously improve themselves to provide performance that is continuously being enhanced. We call this “fuzzy logic” - and the result of it is  - a better driving experience than you would normally have had with other ethanol conversions, and equal to the driving experience you are used to with petrol or normal gasoline.  Plus you’ll have more mileage with a tank of E85.

 

Typically the computer interface for a normal ethanol converter has many items to setup (for those installation centres that know what they are doing.) The end result is that they need to have a set of parameters loaded so that it will understand the engine before it is installed. The SMT8-EFE requires NO SET UP WHATSOEVER - just plug it in and drive away!  As simple as that! Installation centres might know more about your mechanical engine than the SMT8-EFE unit, but the way the engine, the existing engine control unit and the SMT8-EFE behave together is what the ESMT8-EFE masters. Even when we were developing the SMT8-EFE, WE were corrected by her ability to dynamically predict the symbiotic relationship!

 

 

Should communication to the SMT8-EFE be required, it is possible through a simple PC program. Every effort has been made to reduce the need to adjust anything via a computer. The SMT8-EFE will even correct itself, should it find a mistake in hindsight, so that your driving experience is optimised for fuel consumption and ease. Visualise this: the SMT8-EFE as an ethanol professor, specialising in E85 mixtures constantly making decisions and providing innovative solutions to possible problems that could arise. The SMT8-EFE just works and looks after your engine.

 

The SMT8-EFE conversion is one of the best things you could do to your engine. Besides the cleaning properties of ethanol or E85, the SMT8-EFE will ensure that your engine is kept in tip-top shape. Other controllers have to sometimes guess what they need to do and so they just add more ethanol into your engine than is required. The SMT8-EFE NEVER guesses! All decisions are calculated and analysed, and in most cases, the SMT8-EFE has already predicted the situation and provided a precise, economical solution.

 

Starting in the cold is what the SMT8-EFE excels in. With your engine in mind, the precise amount of ethanol is used for starting under very cold temperatures. We have tested the SMT8-EFE to around -20ºC with no problems. We couldn’t go colder - the freezer that we used wouldn’t let us! The starting is monitored, analyzed and recorded for future use, so that the next start up will be improved. The cold starting technology in the SMT8-EFE is totally different because it is able to dynamically adjust the required starting fuel to the engine’s demands, ECU’s behaviour and engine’s temperature. Cold starting just gets better and better with the SMT8-EFE.

 

Should the temperature sensor or the AMP sensor wire break connection, the SMT8-EFE will still work. As a user, you would probably not notice any difference in performance because the SMT8-EFE has backup algorithms that just take over when needed. Thus ensuring that you would not be left stranded along the side of the road!
